Aaron Donald is officially returning to the NFL. The legendary defensive tackle has ended his retirement and agreed to a one-year, $20 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams that can reach $30 million through incentives, bringing one of the most dominant defenders of his generation back to the team where he spent his entire career.
Donald retired in March 2024 after 10 seasons with the Rams, finishing his career to that point with 111 sacks, 543 tackles, three Defensive Player of the Year awards and 10 Pro Bowl selections. He also helped Los Angeles win Super Bowl LVI, recording the decisive defensive play that sealed the championship against the Cincinnati Bengals.
His comeback arrives after weeks of speculation about whether he could return. Rams coach Sean McVay had previously confirmed that Donald was following a structured training process to determine whether his body was ready for another NFL season.
Aaron Donald Trained for 13 Weeks Before Returning
Donald has made it clear that the comeback was not an impulsive decision. Speaking after his return was confirmed, he said he had been in a football mindset for roughly 14 weeks while working to determine whether he could still perform at the required level.
“Do I feel like I can play at a high level? Yes. Do I feel like I can still be myself? 100%,”
Donald said, according to the Rams.
“If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be here.”
His preparation included strength training, conditioning, speed work and football-specific drills. Donald also returned to the Rams facility, participating in individual defensive-line drills as the team begins carefully preparing him for the regular season.
Donald will now join Myles Garrett, who was acquired by Los Angeles earlier this offseason after setting the NFL’s single-season sack record with the Cleveland Browns. The pairing gives the Rams two of the league’s most accomplished defensive linemen on the same roster.
Donald finished his previous Rams career with 111 sacks, 176 tackles for loss and 790 pressures, establishing himself as one of the franchise’s greatest players.
The Rams are coming off a season in which they reached the NFC Championship Game, and Donald’s return adds another major piece to a roster already built around quarterback Matthew Stafford and Garrett. The team opens the 2026 regular season against the San Francisco 49ers on September 10.
For Donald, the comeback represents another opportunity to compete for a second Super Bowl ring after more than two years away from the NFL.
