The Seattle Seahawks have made a massive commitment to one of the cornerstones of their championship defense. Devon Witherspoon has agreed to a four-year, $132 million contract extension that includes more than $101 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
The deal gives Witherspoon an average annual salary of $33 million, surpassing the previous benchmark at his position. The extension also keeps the 25-year-old defensive star in Seattle as the Seahawks attempt to build on their Super Bowl LX victory.
Why the Seahawks Made Witherspoon Their Defensive Priority
Witherspoon’s rapid rise is a major reason behind the size of the contract. Seattle selected him fifth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he has earned Pro Bowl recognition in each of his first three NFL seasons. Through 43 career games, he has recorded 249 tackles, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions, according to Reuters.
His impact was particularly visible during Seattle’s championship campaign. Witherspoon recorded a sack in Super Bowl LX against the New England Patriots, helping the Seahawks secure a 29-13 victory and their second Super Bowl championship.
The contract also reflects how quickly the cornerback market has expanded. Witherspoon now moves ahead of players such as Denzel Ward and Trent McDuffie, setting a new $33 million annual standard for the position.
There is an interesting connection between Witherspoon’s rise and Seattle’s previous roster-building decisions. The Seahawks selected him with a first-round pick acquired through the 2022 trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, turning that asset into a three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion.
Seattle has also committed heavily to another member of its 2023 first-round class. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba received a record-setting extension earlier this offseason, meaning the Seahawks now have two players from that draft class who have reached the top of their respective positional markets.
Witherspoon’s extension is therefore more than just a record-setting payday. It represents Seattle’s confidence that its young defensive star can remain a central figure in the franchise’s pursuit of another championship.
