Elizabeth Holmes is set to take a major step toward leaving federal prison next year, but the former Theranos CEO will not be returning to anything resembling the financial life she once had. According to an update obtained by ABC News, Holmes has been approved for placement at the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas, with the transfer currently scheduled for August 23, 2027.

The move will place Holmes in a community correction setting rather than a traditional federal prison facility. The Bureau of Prisons has cautioned that specific placement information can change and is generally not confirmed until an individual arrives at the designated institution. Holmes is currently serving an 11-year-and-three-month federal sentence stemming from her conviction for defrauding Theranos investors.

Elizabeth Holmes Went From a $4.5 Billion Fortune to Financial Ruin

Holmes’ financial collapse is almost as dramatic as the downfall of Theranos itself. In 2015, Forbes valued her net worth at approximately $4.5 billion, making her the youngest self-made female billionaire in America at the time. That figure was based largely on her roughly 50% stake in Theranos when private investors valued the company at about $9 billion.

That wealth was largely paper wealth rather than billions of dollars sitting in cash or investment accounts. When Theranos’ valuation collapsed following investigations into its blood-testing technology, the value of Holmes’ stake fell with it. Forbes subsequently revised its estimate of her net worth from $4.5 billion to zero in 2016.

Theranos eventually shut down in 2018, and Holmes later faced federal criminal charges over misleading investors. A jury convicted her in January 2022 on one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and three counts of wire fraud involving Theranos investors. She was sentenced to 135 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

The $452 Million Restitution Order Still Hangs Over Holmes

Holmes’ financial position became considerably more complicated after the court ordered her and former Theranos executive Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani to pay $452,047,268 in restitution. The two were made jointly and severally liable, meaning the full amount can be collected from either defendant rather than being automatically divided into two separate $226 million obligations.

The Ninth Circuit later upheld the convictions, sentences and restitution order. The appeals court concluded that the restitution calculation was legally valid, leaving the enormous financial obligation intact.

For that reason, Celebrity Net Worth currently estimates Holmes’ financial position at roughly negative $450 million. That is an estimate rather than an official government determination of her personal net worth, but it illustrates the enormous gap between her former billionaire valuation and her current financial liabilities.

What Happens When Holmes Leaves Prison?

Holmes’ scheduled 2027 transfer does not erase the restitution order. Even if she moves from prison to a halfway house, she will remain subject to the financial consequences of her conviction and the conditions attached to her sentence and supervised release.

Holmes also requested clemency in 2025, seeking to have her sentence commuted. Reuters reported in January 2026 that the request remained under review, while noting that a commutation would not eliminate the restitution obligation.

The contrast with Holmes’ former status is striking. She once appeared on Forbes’ richest self-made women list with an estimated $4.5 billion fortune, while her current financial position is dominated by a restitution judgment exceeding $452 million. Her scheduled move to a halfway house therefore marks an important development in her legal journey, but it does not represent a return to the wealth she once commanded.
