Nearly two years after the sudden death of former One Direction star Liam Payne, new legal developments have confirmed what many expected: his only child, Bear Grey Payne, will inherit the entirety of his father’s estate, valued at approximately $29 million.

The update follows probate proceedings that began after Payne passed away in October 2024 at the age of 31. The singer died without leaving a will, a legal situation known as dying “intestate,” which often leads to complex inheritance disputes. However, in this case, the process has reached a clear and relatively straightforward conclusion.

Legal Outcome Finalized After Probate Review

According to newly surfaced court documents, Bear, now nine years old, has been named the sole beneficiary of Payne’s estate. The total inheritance is reported to be just over $29 million, reflecting a refined valuation after earlier probate filings.

The estate includes a wide range of assets built during Payne’s career, including music royalties, property holdings, and personal investments. While a portion of the funds may be used for Bear’s immediate welfare, the majority will be secured in a trust until he reaches adulthood.

This outcome aligns with inheritance laws in England and Wales, where, in the absence of a spouse or civil partner, the estate is typically passed directly to the deceased’s children.

Following Payne’s death, Cheryl, the singer and Bear’s mother, was appointed as one of the administrators of the estate alongside music industry lawyer Richard Mark Bray. Their role has been to oversee the preservation and management of Payne’s assets during the probate process.

Payne’s music catalog continues to contribute to his estate value through global streaming

Legal experts often note that intestate cases involving high-value estates can become prolonged and contentious. However, in Payne’s case, the absence of competing claims has allowed the process to conclude without major disputes.

A source close to the proceedings told People Magazine that the outcome

“was always expected given the legal structure,”

reinforcing that Bear’s position as sole heir was clear from the outset.

Financial Breakdown and Adjustments Over Time

Initial probate filings in 2025 estimated Payne’s estate at approximately £28.6 million gross (around $38 million at the time), with a net value of about £24.3 million after debts and expenses. The updated figure of $29 million reflects adjustments related to administrative costs, currency fluctuations, and final asset evaluations.

The estate is also reported to include a five-bedroom property in England, along with long-term earnings from Payne’s music catalog. As a member of One Direction and later a solo artist, Payne accumulated substantial wealth through album sales, touring revenue, and streaming royalties.

Notably, reports indicate that Payne’s partner at the time of his death, Kate Cassidy, does not intend to make any claim on the estate, further simplifying the legal process.

Liam Payne rose to international fame as part of One Direction, the globally successful boy band formed on The X Factor in 2010. Alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, Payne helped shape one of the biggest pop acts of the 2010s.

The group sold over 20 million albums worldwide and generated massive touring revenue, including their record-breaking Where We Are Tour, which grossed hundreds of millions globally. After the band’s hiatus in 2016, Payne transitioned into a solo career, releasing hits like Strip That Down and his debut album LP1.
