Zhang Yiming, ByteDance co-founder and founder of TikTok, whose fortune has surpassed $105 billion, making him Asia’s richest person.

Zhang Yiming, the co-founder of ByteDance and the entrepreneur behind TikTok, has become the richest person in Asia for the first time. According to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Zhang’s fortune has climbed above $105 billion, putting him ahead of Indian industrialist Gautam Adani.

The milestone marks a dramatic change from March 2019, when Bloomberg first began tracking Zhang’s wealth at approximately $13 billion. His fortune has since increased more than eightfold, with the latest jump being driven largely by rising valuations for privately held ByteDance and growing investor confidence in its artificial intelligence business.

Zhang’s rise is particularly notable because ByteDance is no longer being valued solely as the company behind TikTok. Its expanding AI portfolio, which includes the Doubao chatbot and Seedance video-generation technology, is becoming increasingly important to how investors view the company’s future.

How Zhang Yiming’s Fortune Surpassed $105 Billion

Zhang’s latest wealth surge is closely connected to ByteDance’s private-market valuation. Unlike publicly traded companies, ByteDance does not have a constantly changing stock price, meaning estimates of Zhang’s personal fortune depend heavily on transactions and valuations involving the privately held technology company.

Bloomberg’s latest calculation incorporated updated ByteDance valuations, helping Zhang’s fortune rise by more than $12 billion during September alone. The increase pushed him past Adani and into the top position among Asia’s billionaires.

The shift also highlights how quickly technology fortunes can grow when a founder retains a substantial stake in a highly valued private company. Zhang co-founded ByteDance in 2012, and the company eventually built a global technology empire around algorithm-driven content recommendation.

TikTok became the most recognizable part of that empire after ByteDance launched Douyin in China in 2016 and introduced TikTok internationally in 2017. The company later acquired Musical.ly and combined the service with TikTok, accelerating the platform’s international growth.

AI Is Becoming A Major Part Of ByteDance’s Future

Although TikTok remains central to ByteDance’s global profile, artificial intelligence is increasingly important to the company’s valuation. ByteDance has expanded into consumer AI through Doubao, while Seedance has placed the company in the rapidly developing AI-generated video market.

That expansion gives investors another reason to assign a higher value to ByteDance beyond the advertising and social-media businesses that made TikTok successful.

Zhang’s rise therefore reflects a broader shift in Asia’s billionaire rankings. Traditional fortunes built through infrastructure, energy, commodities and industrial businesses are increasingly being challenged by wealth generated through software, AI and digital platforms.

Zhang Stepped Down From ByteDance’s Leadership Years Ago

Perhaps one of the most unusual aspects of Zhang’s rise is that he has not been running ByteDance as CEO for several years. In 2021, Zhang announced that he would step away from the CEO position, handing day-to-day leadership to fellow co-founder Liang Rubo.

At the time, Zhang said he wanted to focus more on areas including “long-term strategy, corporate culture and social responsibility.” His decision meant he could step away from daily management while continuing to benefit from ByteDance’s subsequent expansion.

ByteDance has since faced major regulatory challenges, particularly surrounding TikTok’s operations in the United States. Despite those difficulties, the company has continued expanding its technology portfolio and investing heavily in AI.

Zhang’s new position as Asia’s richest person ultimately demonstrates how far ByteDance has evolved from a social-media startup. What began with algorithm-driven content recommendations has developed into a sprawling technology company spanning short-form video, advertising, e-commerce and artificial intelligence.

With Zhang’s fortune now exceeding $105 billion, his rise also signals the growing financial influence of AI-driven technology businesses across Asia.
