Amen Thompson is staying with the Houston Rockets after agreeing to a five-year, $208 million contract extension. The deal keeps the 23-year-old guard-forward in Houston for the foreseeable future as the franchise continues building around its young core.
Thompson was selected No. 4 overall by Houston in the 2023 NBA Draft and has steadily expanded his role during his first three seasons. His new contract reportedly includes a 10% trade kicker, adding another notable detail to one of the largest rookie extensions from the 2023 draft class.
Thompson Emerges as a Key Part of Houston’s Future
Thompson enters the extension after producing career-best numbers during the 2025-26 season. He averaged 18.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals, while also leading the NBA in minutes played, further establishing himself as one of Houston’s most important two-way players.
His defensive ability has been one of the biggest reasons for the Rockets’ commitment. Thompson entered the NBA with a reputation as a strong defender and has developed into one of the league’s more disruptive perimeter stoppers while becoming increasingly effective offensively.
The new agreement also gives Houston continuity alongside Alperen Sengun, who signed a five-year, $185 million extension in 2024. Thompson and Sengun are expected to remain central pieces of the Rockets’ plans as the organization attempts to turn its young roster into a legitimate Western Conference contender.
Houston has won 52 games in each of the past two seasons, but has yet to win a playoff series during that stretch. The franchise is now adding more experience around its young core, with Kevin Durant returning for another season and Fred VanVleet expected back after recovering from a knee injury.
Thompson’s extension signals that Houston views him as more than a promising young player. With the Rockets investing heavily in their emerging core, the next challenge will be translating that regular-season success into sustained postseason results.
