Duren’s All-Star campaign helped establish him as a key part of Detroit’s young core

Jalen Duren’s uncertain future with the Detroit Pistons has finally been resolved. The 22-year-old center has agreed to a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract extension, ending months of negotiations between the All-Star big man and the franchise. The agreement came shortly before the deadline for Duren to accept Detroit’s one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer and enter unrestricted free agency next summer.

The resolution is significant for a Pistons team coming off a major turnaround. Detroit finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 60-22 record, earning the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Duren was a major contributor to that success, posting career highs of 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while shooting 65% from the field across 70 games.

Duren Nearly Bet on Himself With a One-Year Deal

The contract saga could have taken a dramatically different direction. Duren had the option to accept Detroit’s $9.6 million qualifying offer, which would have allowed him to reach unrestricted free agency after the 2026-27 season.

That possibility became particularly notable because Duren had just earned his first All-Star selection and a place on the All-NBA Third Team. He ultimately chose the security of the five-year agreement instead.

Reports indicate that Detroit had previously presented offers worth approximately $170 million to $190 million before putting the $200 million proposal on the table. Negotiations were complicated by reported concerns over contract conditions, including a weight clause that was ultimately removed from the finalized agreement.

Duren’s new deal strengthens a Detroit core that also includes Cade Cunningham and Ausar Thompson. The Pistons selected Duren 13th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, and he has spent his entire four-year career with the franchise.

His playoff performance did create questions during negotiations. Duren averaged 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds in the postseason, a substantial decline from his regular-season production as Detroit reached the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Still, Detroit is betting on Duren’s age, development and dominant regular-season production. The $200 million extension gives the Pistons their starting center for the next five seasons as the franchise attempts to turn its breakthrough 60-win campaign into sustained championship contention.
