Warren Buffett remains one of the world’s most famous investors, but his position among billionaires comes with a unique distinction: he intentionally gave away a massive portion of his fortune. Since 2006, Buffett has donated more than $60 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock to charitable foundations, making him one of the largest individual philanthropists in history.
However, those donations were worth far more than their original value because Berkshire Hathaway shares continued increasing after they left Buffett’s ownership. A new analysis suggests that if Buffett had never donated any of his shares, his net worth today would be dramatically higher.
Instead of his current fortune, estimated at around $145 billion from his remaining Berkshire stake, Buffett could have been worth approximately $365 billion, placing him among the richest people ever recorded.
Buffett’s donated Berkshire shares could be worth over $220 billion today
When Buffett announced his major charitable giving plan in 2006, he owned 474,998 Berkshire Hathaway Class A shares, worth roughly $44 billion at the time. His plan involved gradually donating those shares to foundations, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and family charities connected to his late wife and children.
The key factor behind Buffett’s hypothetical fortune is that he donated company stock rather than cash. Those shares continued gaining value after being transferred to charitable organizations.

Based on Berkshire Hathaway’s current valuation, Buffett’s original 2006 stake would represent around a 33% ownership position in the company. That stake would be worth approximately $367 billion, meaning his hypothetical personal fortune would be close to $365 billion.
The difference between that amount and his current wealth represents the enormous value Buffett voluntarily gave away. While his donations totaled more than $60 billion when made, the shares themselves would now be worth over $220 billion.
Buffett continues plan to give away nearly all of his wealth
Buffett has repeatedly stated that he intends to donate more than 99% of his fortune during his lifetime. His Giving Pledge, launched with Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, encouraged billionaires to commit the majority of their wealth to charitable causes.
Following his latest donation in 2026, Buffett still owns a significant Berkshire Hathaway stake, but he has already outlined plans to distribute his remaining shares over the coming years. His goal is to eventually transfer his remaining wealth to charitable foundations connected to his family.
Even with a hypothetical $365 billion fortune, Buffett would not be the world’s richest person today. However, it would place him among the largest fortunes ever accumulated, surpassing many historic billionaires when adjusted for inflation.
Buffett’s unusual position highlights that he was not pushed down billionaire rankings because of failed investments. Instead, he deliberately removed hundreds of billions of dollars in potential future wealth through philanthropy.
